Kids' Food & Nutrition

Portions and food serves for kids aged 4 through 13.

A new life-size photo guide to take the stress out of children’s nutrition.

Worried whether your child is getting enough of the ‘right stuff’ when it comes to food and drink? Confused by packaging claims on kids’ cuisine from the big manufacturers? Then worry no more. A bright new guide developed by award winning dietitian and nutritionist, Trudy Williams, shows exactly how much food your child needs for great nutrition, growth and health.

Trudy Williams has done the hard work for you by creating a massive book of more than 300 life-size photos of food serves. The book’s called "this=that child size: a life-size photo guide to kids’ food serves". There is nothing complicated about using this book – it is so very simple to use. You can actually see whether your child is having enough of every food group and if not, where the imbalances might be. Trudy also includes tips for turning troublesome eaters into healthy eaters.

Trudy says, "Kids’ nutrition, food and energy needs change as they move from the feisty fours into the tweens". But you don’t need to worry about the nitty gritty detail of changing nutrition needs because Trudy accounted for that when she designed the serve-sizes and straightforward charts contained in the book.

What exactly is a kid-serve? Click here to see an example of serve sizes and portions that form the foundation of a 6-year-old child’s daily healthy diet. These are kid-serves, not adult serves, nor the serves described on food labels or offered at the food court!

This is just a tiny sample of what you’ll find in "this=that child size".

Note that home printers and computer monitors will play tricks with the sizing and colours of the images you see here, so they will be inaccurate when you view the pdf link. When you get the book, you simply line your child’s food up with the accurate life-size photos to check the serve offered is appropriate.

Trudy has not ignored the ‘treat’ foods, although she prefers to call them ‘red extras and red alerts’. She warns that before the age of 6 there really is no room for daily serves of ‘red extras’.

How many kid-serves does a child need?  Any parent knows their child’s appetite and intake changes rapidly, even from day to day. The charts in the book show daily targets for seven key food groups. Children don’t need the last food group, the red extras; these are optional items that unfortunately all too often appear in many kid’s mouths at the age and stage when mum, dad and grandparents are making all the food decisions. There is really not much room for these if you are serious about excellent health, growth, and maximising ability, concentration and performance of your child during school and playtime. And what parent doesn’t want the best for their child? But if you want to include them, then keep the serves incredibly small or save them up to serve as a weekly extra.

An active child or a child heading through a growth spurt will need more top nutrition and energy sources. A skinny child needs to build on the key food groups as well. A child who is putting on too much weight for his/her height may need to eat within the minimum serves suggested – parents should speak with an Accredited Practising Dietitian to add flexibility if needed.

Is your child a healthy weight? This is hard for anyone, especially parents, to judge just by looking so click here for a calculator to check whether your child's weight and height are in the right proportion.

Children are born with a wonderful natural appetite regulator that decides when they’ve had enough, but that regulator knows nothing about quality so it’s up to mum and dad to offer nourishing food.

"this=that child size: a life-size photo guide to kids’ food serves" goes through the minimum target serves for every age from 4 to 13 years.

Kids over 14 years have not been forgotten. Trudy’s original and award winning book called "this=that: a life-size photo guide to food serves" covers everyone else!
