UNIT PRICING EXPOSES HIGH COST OF LUNCHBOX EXTRAS

Parents are paying up to $45 per kg for popular lunchbox snacks, according to Accredited Practising Dietitian, Trudy Williams, yet they’ll skimp on other quality food items costing far less than half that price. The price of convenience not only cuts deep into the budget but it also means that nutrition is sacrificed.

Compare the prices:

  • Top brand muesli bars and lunch-time bars $13.50 - $30.80 per kg (on special!)
  • Rice crackers $12.30 per kg
  • Crispy snacks such as potato chips and corn chips $14.50 through $31.00 per kg
  • Kid’s fancy fruit-flavoured nuggets $25.10 per kg
  • Leading brand fruit straps $45.20 per kg
  • Jubes and lollies $7.50 to $16.90 per kg

Better choices both health and $ wise:

  • Fruit loaf $5.30 per kg
  • Fresh apples $2.50 - $4.00 per kg
  • Mandarins $3.45 per kg
  • Fresh carrots $1.50 - $2.50 per kg
  • Cherry tomatoes $6 - $9 per kg
  • Frozen corn cobs $4.75 per kg
  • Peaches packed in natural juice $4.00 per kg
  • Sultanas $4.00 per kg, but even organic sultanas are cheaper than many lollies at only $9.80 per kg
  • Popping corn (for popping at home) $3.40 per kg

Trudy is available to demonstrate the price and nutrition differences in these and other popular snack foods, and to show tasty and better value (both health and dollar wise) snacks.
