- Aug 24, 2006. TV segment with Brisbane's Channel 9 Extra about serve sizes. Did you know that big bowls lead to big appetites, and this leads to over-serving? Looks can be deceiving and we will eat more if served more. According to US research, by simply serving out of smaller bowls with smaller serving spoons, you will serve and eat less. Use this idea to your advantage. Serve your vegies and salad at the table out of large bowls, but serve the rice or pasta out of smaller bowls. Down-size your pasta dish, but up-size your side-salad plate!
- May, 2006 Television interview for Brisbane's Extra on Channel 9 about new low GI, high fibre white breads.
- April 28, 2006. Television interview for ABC TV Stateline program 'Drastic Measures' about obesity in Queensland. To read a transcript, click here.
- April 6, 2006. ABC 612 Radio with Spencer Howson at breakfast. Invited to respond to newspaper headline claiming that 'new research shows low fat diets are a waste of time when it comes to heart disease and cancer'. The original research, published in Journal American Medical Association, didn't test what we definitely know about the connections between diet and heart disease and cancer. And that's that a diet low in saturated fat rather than low in total fat (the total amount is not so much an issue if you are not overweight) and rich in vegetables, legumes and fruit is protective. Lesson for you? Don't believe the headlines and quick grabs on TV. Go back to the journal to read the fine print or ask a dietitian for their opinion.
- Mar 14, 2006. ABC 612 Radio with Spencer Howson at breakfast. Invited interview about folate fortification of bread and risk of heart disease and stroke. Diets rich in folate reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke. Fruits and vegetables (includes salad) are naturally rich in folate but now Food Standards Australia-New Zealand are considering the fortification of flour with folate. In the mean time, eat more fruit and vegetables for the same protection against heart disease and stroke and you will also reduce your risk of developing high blood pressure, diabetes, and certain cancers in the digestive tract.
- Feb 28, 2006. ABC 612 Radio with Spencer Howson at breakfast. Invited interview about recently released Obesity Statistics that confirm Aussies are getting bigger but many don't see themselves as overweight. About 62% of adult men and 45% of adult women are overweight or obese .... that's about 1 in every 2 adults is overweight or obese. But incredibly only 1 in every 3 adults (32% of men and 37% of women) believed that they were overweight. Women are more likely to make healthy choices, but both men and women fall short on the recommended targets for fruit and vegetable intake. About 60% of women but only 48% of men eat enough fruit. Alarmingly, only 16% of women and 11% of men eat enough vegetables. The harsh fat figures come from the Australian Bureau of Statistics' recent report titled "4364.0 National Health Survey: Summary of Results 2004-2005".
