WINE REVIEW: Alcohol-free | Zero Alcohol | De-alcoholised | Alcohol Removed Wines
Of more than 130 varieties of alcohol-free wines (also known as zero alcohol, de-alcoholised, alcohol removed wines) available in Australia from bottle shops, online retailers or supermarkets, you will surely find a drop to suit your palate and health goals.
I collated this information by contacting vineyards, importers, winemakers and exploring websites and retail outlets during Dec 2022. Some vineyards have failed to respond and I am still waiting for data on about some varieties of zero alcohol wines. When data arrives, I will update this table. You’ll notice a few blanks in the carbohydrate column because the information was not available but I included the drink because both the energy and alcohol content were available as these are the my primary focus for the table and article.
Interesting notes:
- A simple switch from traditional wine to one that contains less than 80 kJ per 100 ml will slash your kJ (cal) intake by at least 70%. Look in the blue section in the table below. Energy-wise, you could drink an entire bottle of one of these alcohol-free wines for every 210 ml of traditional wine and with the bonus of no hangover or sluggish start to the next day.
- Not all zero alcohol wines are low in kilojoules or calories (kJ or cals) but there are 80 that contain fewer calories than conventional non-alcoholic alternatives of fruit juice and soft drink. These sit before the pink 'fruit juice' row in the table.
- Seventy-six have fewer than half the kJ of traditional wine. This is excellent news for anyone wanting to reduce the risk of weight gain, not just those wanting to cut their alcohol intake. Choose an alcohol-free wine that contains less than 140 kJ per 100 ml, which is about half the kJ (cal) load of traditional wine.
- As a general guide, the higher the carbohydrate content, the higher the kilojoules (cals) except when alcohol is present, i.e. traditional wine. Gram for gram, pure alcohol has a much higher energy rating than carbohydrate.
- Most alcohol-free wines contain less than 0.3 (usually nil) standard drinks per bottle. Great new for those wanting to cut their alcohol intake.
- Carefully read and check the label of the drink you select because the name, variety and branding are often very close to the traditional full strength and lighter versions of a similar wine. Check labeling at the time of purchase as the nutrient profile might have changed since this article was written in Dec 2022.
